The New EU Regulations from 2024

Starting August 21, 2024, the new eFTI Regulation (Electronic Freight Transport Information) will come into effect, bringing significant changes to the logistics industry. This regulation enables the digital transmission of information about freight transport between economic operators and authorities. The goal is to advance digitalization, reduce administrative costs, improve enforcement capabilities for authorities, and make transportation more efficient and sustainable.

Intelligent Tachographs

Another key element of the reforms is the introduction of new intelligent tachographs. From August 21, 2023, all new trucks and buses must be equipped with these devices. These tachographs provide more accurate data and facilitate compliance with regulations through automated functions. By December 31, 2024, existing vehicles that are engaged in cross-border transport and are equipped with analog or digital tachographs must also be retrofitted with the new intelligent devices. This will significantly ease operations: automatic border crossings will be recorded, eliminating the need for manual stops to input the country code.

Conclusion

The year 2024 marks a turning point for EU logistics. The new regulations present both opportunities and challenges. By promoting digitalization, introducing intelligent tachographs, and enhancing safety systems, the EU aims to increase efficiency, safety, and transparency in freight transport. Companies will need to adapt to these developments to meet new requirements and benefit from the advantages of digital and automated systems. The coming years could thus become a period of transformation and innovation in the logistics industry.
